More determined measures are needed at EU level than hitherto so that the energy price is slashed, president Klaus Iohannis said on Friday in Prague.
“With all the sanctions, with all the measures, which have been good and which have been taken so far, a significant decrease in energy prices has not yet been achieved and that means that we must be more determined. I remain on my proposal: to separate the gas market from the electricity market, and I believe that more and more in the Council are of the same opinion. I hope that the Commission will also be convinced that this is one of the measures that can deliver,” the president said, before attending the informal meeting of the European Council in Prague.
Ioahnnis stressed that there is also a need to diversify energy resources in general.
“We have some progress here, but it’s still too little. The Greece-Bulgaria interconnector has started to operate, but the capacity needs to be increased. The capacity of European ports for LNG, for liquefied gas must be increased, and other measures,” Iohannis said.
The European Council will also discuss the situation in Ukraine in Prague.
“We will categorically condemn the unrecognized annexations of territories by Russia, but at the same time, I want to expressly welcome the adoption of the eighth package of sanctions, which was approved in the past week’s talks. On the other hand, we will discuss some measures, I hope quite concrete, related to the coming winter, about how can we support Ukraine to get over the coming winter,” president Iohannis said.
According to him, the discussions at the European Council meeting will also cover issues related to the economy in general.
“Measures that come to prevent a recession in Europe are obviously necessary,” he said.
Regarding the proposal put forward by the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, regarding the temporary capping of gas prices, president Iohannis reiterated that the EC experts must come up with details for this limitation of prices, so as not to affect suppliers such as Norway, which delivers one third of European gas. Regarding the increase in the allocation for the RePower project, president Iohannis said that for Romania this would be welcome.
“I believe that, after all, there is a need for a broader package of measures not only to pass the winter, but to benefit in the future from enough energy and affordable prices for the population,” the president concluded.
Working out a decent energy saving plan would be a pretty good idea
President Klaus Iohannis declared on Friday that devising a “decent” plan for energy saving in Romania would be a pretty good idea.
“I think that working out a decent plan would be a pretty good idea; I repeat, nobody wants people to stay in the cold, but a decent, sensible saving plan would be probably welcome,” Iohannis said before attending the European Council’s informal meeting in Prague.
On Thursday, the Romanian head of state participated in the first meeting of the European Political Community.
Romania fulfills Schengen technical conditions since 2011
Since 2011, Romania has fulfilled all the technical conditions for joining the Schengen area and it is important for Romanians to benefit from the free movement of people, President Klaus Iohannis stressed on Friday, before attending the informal meeting of the European Council in Prague.
“Schengen is neither about resources nor about other things. It is about technical criteria that must be met, especially on border control, migration control and so on. We have been fulfilling all the technical conditions since 2011. This has been verified and verified again. In the meantime, we are effectively, so de facto, part of a series of Schengen-related programmes and procedures, and we are doing our job very well there. But, apart from that, it is clear that, if we are talking about unity and solidarity in Europe, it must also exist among us. And then, my opinion, ours, is that all the formats that bring us together must be completed. The Schengen format allows the free movement of people and I think this is important for Romanians as well, to consider themselves Europeans with full rights,” Iohannis said.
He declared himself convinced that Europe’s security and control over the movement of people coming from outside would be greatly improved if Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia were co-opted into the Schengen area.
“We fulfill the technical conditions, but now, these days, we have offered the possibility to a body of experts to come and check them once more, so that everyone can be assured that they are OK,” klaus Iohannis said.
President Iohannis announced that next week the Prime Minister of the Government of The Netherlands, Mark Rutte, will come to Romania, to visit the Dutch troops that are stationed in Cincu.
