"The United States confirmed to us that we have 3 billion dollars from the American EXIM.

() The problem is to adapt the CANDU technology, according to the new post-Fukushima norms, to some existing structures because they cannot be taken down safely , 1 and 2 work right next to them, and then the new technology has to be adapted to the existing structures.

It helps us a lot that in Canada the whole nuclear sector has experienced a renaissance in recent years and many nuclear projects are restarting in Ontario," said Sebastian Burduja.

The Minister of Energy specified that part of the financing of the works for the two reactors will be provided by the USA and Canada, and the technological system used will also be the CANDU system.

„The United States confirmed to us that we have 3 billion dollars from the American EXIM. I will be going to Canada and there will be a new announcement with a major Canadian endorsement. We also have Italian, French, including Korean support. (…)The whole CANDU system will also be at reactors 3 and 4. (…) The problem is to adapt the CANDU technology, according to the new post-Fukushima norms, to some existing structures because they cannot be taken down safely , 1 and 2 work right next to them, and then the new technology has to be adapted to the existing structures. We work closely with the Canadian company that owns CANDU. It helps us a lot that in Canada the whole nuclear sector has experienced a renaissance in recent years and many nuclear projects are restarting in Ontario,” said Sebastian Burduja.

He specified that in a list of the 440 existing nuclear reactors in the world, units 2 and 1 from Cernavodă are in first and third place, respectively, from the perspective of safety and efficiency.

The Minister of Energy also referred to the small nuclear reactors that will be installed in Doiceşti, in Dâmboviţa county, and said that 6 SMRs will be installed in that area. .

„There was a slight increase in the capacity of each module at Doiceşti, because there will be 6 reactors, and then it must be re-accredited, but it is a much faster process than the first technology accreditation, which the New Scale Power LLC company did- with great success. It’s an important company for the American state, and in the discussions we had in Washington, everyone told us: «Accelerate, you have our full support! It is important for the whole region!”. In fact, it is a stake for Romania and for Nuclearelectrica. We are not the only state that wants these SMRs, but we have the best chance of being the first European state to have them. This means that Nuclearelectrica will be able to operate these SMRs in other European states as well, even as far as Georgia, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, etc.”, said Minister Sebastian Burduja.

Through the 6 SMRs, the Doiceşti system would have an installed production capacity of 420 megawatt-hours, while a nuclear reactor at the Cernavodă Power Plant has an installed production capacity of 700 megawatt-hours.
