Energy Minister announces plan to double Romania’s electricity production by 2032: Major investments in green, nuclear, and storage
Romania is making significant strides toward a smart energy transition, focusing on security, accessibility, and sustainability. The country currently produces 7,117 MW from a diversified energy mix — hydrocarbons, coal, nuclear, hydro, wind, solar, biomass, and storage.
A key milestone is the expansion of storage capacities, which have now surpassed biomass and are rapidly growing, with over 1,000 MWh expected to be installed in 2024, supported by PNRR funds and the Modernization Fund.
During the current cold spell, coal remains the second-largest energy source after gas, ensuring energy stability. However, Romania plans to replace coal-fired plants with gas power stations, which will eventually be substituted by nuclear power plants, including SMRs.
Green energy is also on the rise, with 844 MW generated from wind and 245 MW from solar, excluding the growing contribution of prosumers. As storage capacity increases, Romania will be able to harness more green energy even on days without sun or wind.
The government has launched its most ambitious energy investment program in the past 35 years, aiming for over 10,000 MW from solar and wind, 3,500 MW from gas, 2,200 MW from nuclear, 500 MW from hydro, and 1,000 MW from pumped-storage hydropower plants.
By 2032, Romania aims to double its electricity production and become a major regional energy exporter, ensuring energy independence and competitive prices for both consumers and industries.
