Neptun Deep platform, a strategic step for Romania’s energy independence
Today, the Transocean Barents platform, one of the world’s largest oil platforms, was officially presented in Constanța Port before heading offshore to begin drilling operations as part of the Neptun Deep project. This is considered Romania’s most important energy project in recent decades, with the potential to double the country’s natural gas production.
The event was attended by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacșu, Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja, Minister of Environment Mircea Fechet, Head of the Prime Minister’s Chancellery Radu Oprea, as well as representatives of Romgaz and OMV Petrom.
The Transocean Barents platform, also known as “Mighty Barents”, will operate approximately 160 kilometers offshore, near Tuzla, where it will drill 10 wells at depths exceeding 4,000 meters. The extracted gas will be transported through the Tuzla-Podișor pipeline, which is already under construction, with the first deliveries expected in 2027.
“We place great hopes in Neptun Deep – for Romania and for Europe. It is one of the largest projects through which Romania and European states can ensure their energy independence and security, along with competitive prices for ordinary people and businesses,” said Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja in a statement published on his Facebook page.
The total investment in Neptun Deep amounts to €4 billion, and estimates indicate that the project will contribute over €20 billion to the state budget. With reserves exceeding 100 billion cubic meters of natural gas, Romania will become the largest natural gas producer in the European Union.
Officials present at the event also emphasized the strategic importance of the project in the current geopolitical context. Romania is taking on a key role in Europe’s energy security, and accelerating investments in Neptun Deep is a crucial step in reducing dependence on external resources.
The project has already surpassed 33% of its execution schedule and is progressing ahead of the established deadlines. Romanian officials stress that nothing will stop its implementation, despite the challenges encountered.
“Romanian gas in our homes and economy will bring security and lower prices. For all this, I thank everyone who has made and continues to make this dream possible,” added the Minister of Energy.
