Eaton, one of the global leaders in smart energy management, shares some useful tips to keep your electricity bills from reaching exorbitant figures, especially in summer.
It is the middle of summer and the high temperatures, often extreme, have become increasingly unbearable. According to experts, the average electricity consumption per household is about 280 kWh per month in Romania but, in June-September, although there are more daylight hours and less artificial lighting is needed, the use of electrical appliances such as air conditioners, fans and other air conditioning equipment considerably increases electricity consumption in households.
To help people avoid high energy bills and promote responsible consumption, Eaton, a leading smart energy management company, has compiled a list of five useful tips to save energy during the summer season and beyond.
Use efficient appliances: when purchasing new appliances, choose those with an energy label of A or higher. They use less energy and can be a saving in the long run. It is also advisable to install them in areas that are not close to appliances that emit heat, thus optimizing their operation.
Unplug appliances when you are not using them: avoid leaving devices in stand-by mode, because even though they may not seem to be consuming power, they continue to use energy. In fact, leaving appliances on for a long period of time can risk short-circuiting and not only can these appliances break down, but can have more serious consequences.
Use air conditioning wisely: It is recommended to keep the temperature between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius for 8-10 hours of the day than 3-4 hours between 16-17 degrees during the time of day with maximum outdoor heat discomfort. In fact, for every degree less, your air conditioner can consume about 8% more. It is also recommended to technically check your air conditioner twice a year and change it at certain intervals, as the older it is, the more it consumes.
Renewable energy systems: where possible, solar panels should be installed in homes. By incorporating renewable energy into your home, you will not only promote more sustainable and respectful consumption, but you will also achieve considerable cost savings by not being completely dependent on the electricity grid. These kinds of solutions are becoming increasingly important, not only because of new regulations and support from government programs, but also because of society’s growing commitment to the environment.
Incorporating tools and apps for energy monitoring: examples include energy meters, connected apps, smart thermostats or virtual assistants. These technologies connect to electrical appliances and provide real-time information on energy consumption, allow recording consumption, programming devices, and adjusting spending as needed.
Easy lighting control from your smartphone or tablet is made possible with smart home apps, which provide the ability to manage lighting, blinds or other electrical appliances commonly found in homes. Wireless smart home systems, such as Eaton’s xComfort, are easy-to-install and easy-to-use solutions that in addition to control and safety functions also provide the energy management side.
“By implementing these tips in our daily lives, we will be able to reduce our electricity consumption, decreasing the demand for energy from non-renewable sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, we will become more responsible consumers”, said Gabriel Tache, General Manager at Eaton Romania. “At Eaton we also have devices such as Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), which are designed to protect domestic consumers in case of emergencies or power outages, which are very common during the summer. In this way, we ensure the integrity and continued operation of equipment during periods of extreme temperatures.”
