Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union drop by 4% in early 2024

Greenhouse gas emissions from economic activities in the European Union decreased by 4% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, according to a Eurostat report. The most significant reductions were observed in the electricity and natural gas supply sectors, as well as in households.

Eurostat’s data shows that emissions fell in 20 EU member states, remained stable in Cyprus, and increased in Romania, Malta, Lithuania, Latvia, Greece, and Slovenia. Bulgaria and Germany recorded the largest reductions, with emissions dropping by over 15% and 7%, respectively.

The reduction in emissions also impacted the EU’s GDP, which grew by only 0.3% in the first quarter of 2024. Among the 20 states with emission reductions, eight reported a decline in GDP, while the other 12 saw minor economic growth.
