Meta Platforms signs agreement for 150 MW geothermal energy with Sage Geosystems
Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, has reached an agreement to purchase up to 150 MW of geothermal energy from Sage Geosystems to power its data centers in the U.S. This move comes as the company ramps up efforts to enhance its infrastructure to support massive investments in energy-intensive artificial intelligence, according to Reuters.
The first phase of the project is expected to be operational by 2027 and aims to significantly increase the use of geothermal energy in the United States. A spokesperson for Meta stated that the energy from Sage Geosystems will be integrated into the grid rather than directly powering a specific data center. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
