With a capacity of 10 megawatts, the plant will produce 1,600 tons of carbon-neutral green hydrogen annually for fuel production.

Ádám Horváth, Vice President of New and Sustainable Businesses at MOL Group, stated, “Green hydrogen is a clean and versatile energy source that we are currently using in fuel production to reduce our carbon footprint.

The production and use of green hydrogen innovatively contribute to the transition to green energy, a fundamental goal of MOL’s strategy.

MOL starts green hydrogen production at largest facility in Central and Eastern Europe

MOL has commenced production at the largest green hydrogen facility in Central and Eastern Europe, located at its Százhalombatta refinery in Hungary. With a capacity of 10 megawatts, the plant will produce 1,600 tons of carbon-neutral green hydrogen annually for fuel production.

The new facility is expected to cut the Dunărea refinery’s carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tons, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of approximately 5,400 standard vehicles. This investment aligns with MOL Group’s SHAPE TOMORROW strategy, aimed at enhancing sustainability, competitiveness, and energy independence in the region.

Inaugurated in April, the Százhalombatta plant uses a 10-megawatt electrolysis unit from Plug Power. Production has begun following pressure tests, process control system inspections, electrolyte cell integration, and the commissioning of the water treatment system.

Ádám Horváth, Vice President of New and Sustainable Businesses at MOL Group, stated, “Green hydrogen is a clean and versatile energy source that we are currently using in fuel production to reduce our carbon footprint. According to our plans, it will soon also be used in the transport sector. The production and use of green hydrogen innovatively contribute to the transition to green energy, a fundamental goal of MOL’s strategy. Following Százhalombatta, we plan similar facilities in Rijeka and Bratislava, with the latter expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2026.”

The Százhalombatta facility, costing 22 million euros, will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the Dunărea refinery, replacing the current natural gas-based fuel production process that contributes to one-sixth of MOL Group’s total CO2 emissions.
