Romania, Greece, and Bulgaria collaborate to address rising electricity prices
In response to the alarming rise in electricity prices in Southeastern Europe, Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria have announced a close collaboration to find sustainable solutions. Theodore Skylakakis, Greece’s Minister of Energy, stated that the current European Union unified electricity market fails to meet the specific needs of the region, where prices have surged in recent months.
Greece, which sources nearly half of its electricity from renewable sources, including photovoltaic and wind farms, faces significant price increases during the summer when demand for air conditioning peaks and supply from other countries is reduced. In this context, Greece has decided to collaborate with Romania and Bulgaria to create a permanent intervention mechanism to regulate prices during extreme volatility caused by the energy isolation of Southeastern Europe from the rest of the European market.
Greece’s Ministry of Energy announced that the joint initiative will be adopted by the energy ministers of the three countries, aiming to ensure a coordinated and effective response to price fluctuations. Additionally, the Greek government has extended the tax on the exceptional profits of energy companies to fund subsidies for consumers affected by price increases.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that the Greek government will continue to provide these subsidies until European authorities find a viable solution to the energy pricing issue. This regional collaboration marks an important step in addressing the energy and economic challenges facing Southeastern Europe.
