On November 4-5, 2024, the Romania-Japan Energy Forum takes place in Bucharest, organized by Romania’s Ministry of Energy, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and Wise Finance Solutions. This landmark event brings together energy companies and public institutions from both countries, led by Romania’s Minister of Energy, Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, and Japan’s Vice Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Mr. Shinji Takeuchi. The forum follows the elevation of Romania-Japan relations to a strategic partnership on March 7, 2023.

The forum has accelerated joint energy projects between the two countries, particularly in the development of new-generation nuclear energy, expansion of renewable energy storage capacities, green hydrogen production, and implementation of carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies.

Today’s forum is not just an exchange of ideas; it includes the commitment to concrete actions. Through our partnerships, Romania is taking on a leadership role in renewable and nuclear energy in the region. Today, we have taken a concrete step towards a more secure, competitive, and sustainable Romania from an energy perspective. I am confident that through this collaboration, combining the expertise of Japan’s administration and private sector with Romania’s openness and existing opportunities, we will see remarkable results in the near future in our bilateral relationship, through partnerships focusing on pumped-storage hydropower plants, battery storage, hydrogen and blue ammonia production, uranium production, carbon capture, and more. We are looking at investments worth billions of euros that will create new jobs and ensure affordable energy prices and energy security for all Romanians,” stated Minister of Energy, Sebastian-Ioan Burduja.

During the forum, Romania’s Ministry of Energy and the Japanese company Itochu Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of the Tarnița-Lăpuștești investment, a strategic project essential for balancing the national energy system, especially as renewable energy’s share increases.

Considering current global challenges, intensified by the conflict in Ukraine and the rising energy demand in sectors like IT and heavy industry, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating on innovative solutions for energy security. Romania presented several major projects, including Units 3 and 4 at Cernavodă and the small modular reactors (SMR) project at Doicești, inviting Japanese partners to contribute with technology and expertise. Other high-potential cooperation areas include centralized heating systems, hydrogen production, and renewable electricity generation.

The ministers and companies from both countries also confirmed their support for attracting Japanese investments in Romania and establishing joint financing programs, particularly in high-tech sectors.
