The law approving the signing of the Support Agreement between the Romanian State and the Nuclearelectrica National Company for the Cernavoda NPP Units 3 and 4 Project has been adopted, Energy Minister Virgil Popescu informs on Tuesday.
“Thus, Unit 3 will enter into operation at the end of 2030 and Unit 4 in 2031,” the minister wrote on his Facebook page.
The purpose of the agreement is to establish the effective modalities of cooperation between the parties, by setting the commitments and obligations of the Romanian state regarding the provision of the necessary measures for financing the project, implementation and adoption of support measures, including legislative measures.
According to the data published on the Nuclearelectrica website, the CANDU 3 and 4 Cernavoda NPP project is foreseen in Romania’s Energy Strategy Project 2019-2030 with a 2050 perspective, as well as in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Change Plan, as a pillar of Romania’s energy independence and of the fulfillment of the decarbonisation goals assumed by Romania as an EU Member State.
Through the implementation of the project, the contribution of nuclear energy to the total national energy production will be 36% and the contribution of nuclear energy to the total CO2-free energy production will be 66%, simultaneously with the development of the domestic supply chain and other collateral industries.
The project foresees the construction of 2 more CANDU 6 units on the Cernavoda NPP site, with a capacity of 700 MW/unit. The estimated cost is 7 billion euro, Agerpres reports.
