Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja: Need for energy interconnections in southeast Europe highlighted at Energy Ministers’ Meeting
At the Energy Ministers’ Council meeting, the majority of member states firmly supported the urgent need for expanding energy interconnections, declared Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja on Wednesday. The meeting was marked by requests from Bulgaria and Greece to activate consumer protection mechanisms and potentially impose taxes on inframarginal producers.
Burduja explained that the necessary interconnections cannot be realized quickly, and on a short-term basis, Greece and Bulgaria proposed implementing measures to protect consumers, given that energy prices in Romania are significantly higher than in Western Europe. “If we are paying six, eight, or ten times more than in other European states, we need exceptional measures,” the minister added.
He also noted that Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece have sent a letter to the European Commission signaling that the lack of cross-border interconnection limits efficient energy flows in Southeast Europe, especially during peak hours when renewable energy generation decreases.
The proposals put forward by Burduja include accelerating investments in new interconnections and implementing exceptional measures to protect European citizens. “It is incorrect and unacceptable that, in the context of a single market, prices are so disparate. We must ensure that the energy market operates fairly for everyone,” the minister concluded.
The meeting thus underscored the importance of collaboration among regional states and the urgent need to develop energy infrastructure to facilitate better integration into the European energy market and contribute to price stabilization.
