A recent European Commission report reveals that 71% of Romania’s energy mix relies on fossil fuels, exceeding the European Union average of 69%.

The report highlights Romania’s limited capacity for clean technology production and notes a halving of public investment in research and development between 2015 and 2022.

Romania also boasts significant gas storage capacity, covering 31% of its annual consumption, with current storage levels at 90%, providing a strong advantage for the winter season.

EU report: Romania’s energy mix is 71% fossil fuels but leads in renewable energy and gas storage

A recent European Commission report reveals that 71% of Romania’s energy mix relies on fossil fuels, exceeding the European Union average of 69%. However, Romania outperforms the EU in electricity generation from renewable sources, with 44% compared to the EU average of under 40%.

The report highlights Romania’s limited capacity for clean technology production and notes a halving of public investment in research and development between 2015 and 2022.

On a positive note, Romania has a lower dependence on imported gas, being the second-largest producer in Europe. Additionally, the country has managed to reduce gas consumption by 20% over the past two years without impacting industrial activity, surpassing the EU average reduction of 18%.

Romania also boasts significant gas storage capacity, covering 31% of its annual consumption, with current storage levels at 90%, providing a strong advantage for the winter season.

Despite these strengths, energy poverty remains a critical issue, with about one-third of the population struggling with energy bill payments or inadequate heating.
